Devastating Update on UPS Incident: Fatalities Climbs to 13
The tally of fatalities resulting from the transport jet that ignited and crashed has now risen to 13, per recent announcements.
Mayor's Statement
“On my way to the Union’s candlelight gathering, I was informed of a 13th person that passed away as a consequence of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” expressed the local official in a social media post. “My prayers is with the relatives, friends and peers of all who were killed in this recent calamity. We will get through this together.”
Casualties Identified
A statement from the company listed the pilots on board the jet as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our sympathies go out to every staff member who has been impacted and all in our Louisville community – supporting you and guaranteeing you get the care and assistance you need is our priority,” the firm’s message expressed.
Inquiry Findings
National investigators disclosed that the jet’s wing ignited and an engine separated soon after departure from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, leading to the jet to fall and erupt into a blaze.
The safety agency announced it is investigating the plane’s upkeep logs, that was in Texas for repairs a period prior to the incident.
Flight tracking records showed the jet was on the runway in that location from early September to last week.
“We are aware that this jet was present in the facility,” remarked an official on Thursday, without providing a exact time frame. “We will look at every piece of repairs that was performed, from the repair visit, straight to the day of the flight.”
Retrieval of Vital Evidence
The pilot’s recorder and information unit were retrieved, and the motor was discovered on the airfield.
The units – known as flight recorders – were built to survive collision damage and intense heat from fires, and they looked to be undamaged when found among the remains. Authorities plan on analyzing recordings from the recorders.
The plane’s last data recordings showed an altitude of that level and a speed of 210 miles per hour ahead of the impact.
Service Record
Per Federal Aviation Administration files from 18 September, a fracture on a component within the fuel container needed maintenance.
The company ST Engineering, which said it provides structural repairs for UPS’s jet and operates a repair facility in San Antonio, declined to comment, but expressed it would assist completely when investigators approached it.
Operations Resume
At the same time, the facility services resumed that evening with its overnight or nighttime operation, official the company official said. All three landing strips at the airport were also open again.
The UPS package handling facility in the city is the company’s biggest. The facility engages in excess of 20,000 individuals in the area, processes 300 flights daily and organizes in excess of a huge volume of items each hour.
Local Response
A candlelight vigil was organized on the late afternoon of that date by the local Teamsters Union, which supports employees at the airfield, the firm’s primary freight center.
Worker representatives, which represents staff, began the memorial with a quiet tribute at that time, the approximate time of the incident previously.
“This event was so unexpected, so surprising,” the mayor told the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a moment to say goodbye to any of those who we have said farewell to.”
